The hospitality industry is undergoing a profound transformation. Today’s guests are no longer looking only for comfort, luxury and excellent service — they increasingly want to stay in hotels that demonstrate genuine environmental and social responsibility.
Sustainability is no longer a niche concept or a marketing add-on. It is becoming one of the defining pillars of modern hospitality excellence.
This is why the recent Green Globe certification of Mövenpick Zagreb represents an important milestone not only for the hotel itself, but also for the future of sustainable tourism development in Croatia.
For Hosted Consulting, this project carries particular significance, as Mövenpick Zagreb became the very first hotel in Croatia to successfully undergo the Green Globe certification preparation process under the consultancy leadership of founder Jakša Jukić.
Consultancy, Preparation and Independent External Audit
One important aspect that is often misunderstood within sustainability certification is the distinction between consultancy support and the final independent certification audit itself.
In the case of Mövenpick Zagreb, Hosted Consulting acted in the role of sustainability consultant and implementation partner throughout the preparation phase of the Green Globe process.
This included:
- sustainability gap analysis,
- operational alignment with Green Globe criteria,
- staff education and awareness,
- documentation support,
- implementation guidance,
- indicator preparation,
- and overall sustainability strategy coordination.
Once the hotel’s sustainability systems, operational procedures and documentation were fully prepared and uploaded into the Green Globe platform, the final independent assessment and verification process was carried out by an accredited external Green Globe auditor from Slovenia.
This separation between consultancy and final audit assessment is extremely important in order to maintain transparency, objectivity and certification credibility.
Within the Green Globe system, there are generally two possible pathways for hotels:
- a hotel may independently prepare its own documentation and operational systems before undergoing the external audit process, or
- the hotel may engage a Green Globe consultant such as Hosted Consulting to guide and support the implementation and preparation process before the final audit takes place.
At the same time, it is also possible for certified Green Globe professionals to act directly in the role of auditor and assessor.
However, in order to avoid any conflict of interest and preserve full certification integrity, Hosted Consulting deliberately separates these two functions on a project-by-project basis. Either the role of consultant is performed, or the role of independent auditor — but never both simultaneously for the same client.
This distinction helps ensure that the Green Globe certification process remains professionally transparent, internationally credible and aligned with best-practice certification standards.
Building a Sustainable Hospitality Culture
Located in Croatia’s vibrant capital city, Mövenpick Zagreb combines contemporary hospitality standards with a growing commitment to sustainability, community engagement and responsible operations.
Under the leadership of Leonardo Buzov Vulas and with the support of Hosted Consulting throughout the Green Globe implementation process, the hotel successfully achieved its inaugural Green Globe certification by aligning operations with internationally recognized sustainability criteria.
According to Leonardo Buzov Vulas:
“We’re officially Green Globe certified, and I couldn’t be prouder of our dedicated team who have worked tirelessly to make this green dream a reality. Here at Mövenpick Zagreb, we’re not just about premium hospitality — we’re about leaving a positive footprint on the planet.”
One of the most important aspects of successful sustainability certification is understanding that sustainability is not created through paperwork alone.
It is created through operational culture, management commitment, employee engagement and continuous improvement across all departments of a hotel.
This was one of the key focuses throughout the consultancy process delivered by Hosted Consulting — helping translate Green Globe criteria into practical, measurable and realistic hotel operations.
Water Conservation with Real Measurable Impact
Among the hotel’s most successful sustainability initiatives has been the implementation of Accor’s “Skip the Clean” program.
The initiative allows guests staying longer than two nights to voluntarily opt out of daily housekeeping services, reducing unnecessary towel and linen washing, chemical use and housekeeping resource consumption.
The environmental impact is substantial.
By reducing cleaning frequency, the hotel is estimated to save up to 60 liters of water per room per day — equivalent to approximately 6,500 showers annually. In addition to water conservation, the initiative also contributes toward lower energy consumption and reduced detergent usage.
What makes this particularly encouraging is the exceptionally positive guest participation rate, demonstrating that modern travelers are increasingly willing to actively participate in sustainability initiatives when they are communicated transparently and authentically.
From a sustainability consultancy perspective, this type of initiative perfectly demonstrates how environmental responsibility can simultaneously:
- reduce operational costs,
- improve resource efficiency,
- engage guests positively,
- and strengthen long-term brand positioning.
Sustainability Is About People Too
One of the most overlooked aspects of sustainability within hospitality is the social responsibility component.
True sustainability is not only about energy systems, waste separation or water reduction. It is equally about how businesses treat employees, local communities and vulnerable social groups.
Since opening in 2022, Mövenpick Zagreb has actively participated in the global “Kilo of Kindness” initiative organized by Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts.
Through this initiative, guests and local residents contribute clothing, food, toys and school supplies to disadvantaged families and children. Over the past three years, the hotel has collected more than 700 kilograms of donations supporting local humanitarian organizations including:
- SOS Dječje Selo
- Dobra Volja
- Dobro Dobrim
These types of initiatives strengthen the relationship between hotels and local communities while creating a more meaningful and socially integrated tourism model.
Diversity, Inclusion and Local Employment
Another important pillar of Mövenpick Zagreb’s sustainability strategy is its focus on local employment and inclusive workplace culture.
Approximately 90% of the hotel’s workforce consists of locally employed staff, many of whom are residents of Zagreb and the surrounding area. In today’s highly challenging hospitality labor market, this represents a significant operational achievement.
At the same time, the hotel actively promotes:
- gender equality,
- multicultural representation,
- LGBTQ+ inclusion,
- accessibility,
- and equal opportunity employment practices.
These initiatives align closely with the wider ESG direction increasingly shaping global hospitality investment and tourism development strategies.
Why Green Globe Certification Matters
Green Globe certification is far more than a logo or marketing label.
It is a comprehensive sustainability management framework based on internationally recognized criteria covering:
- environmental management,
- energy and water efficiency,
- waste reduction,
- cultural heritage preservation,
- sustainable procurement,
- staff education,
- social responsibility,
- and community engagement.
For hotels, Green Globe certification provides:
- measurable sustainability benchmarking,
- stronger ESG positioning,
- improved operational efficiency,
- increased international credibility,
- and growing appeal to environmentally conscious travelers and corporate partners.
For Croatia as a tourism destination, broader adoption of internationally recognized sustainability certification systems will become increasingly important in maintaining long-term competitiveness while protecting natural and cultural resources for future generations.
Hosted Consulting and the Future of Sustainable Tourism in Croatia
The successful Green Globe certification of Mövenpick Zagreb marks an important milestone for Hosted Consulting and for the broader development of sustainable hospitality standards within Croatia.
As the first Green Globe hotel consultancy preparation project successfully completed by Hosted Consulting in Croatia, the project demonstrates that Croatian hotels are fully capable of achieving world-class sustainability standards when supported by structured implementation strategies, operational guidance and committed leadership teams.
Founded by Jakša Jukić, Hosted Consulting continues working with hotels, resorts and tourism developments across Croatia and the wider region on:
- Green Globe certification preparation,
- ESG alignment,
- sustainability strategy development,
- eco-certification readiness,
- operational sustainability transformation,
- staff sustainability education,

The future of hospitality will increasingly belong to businesses that successfully combine operational excellence with genuine environmental and social responsibility.
Mövenpick Zagreb has taken an important step in that direction — and hopefully many others in Croatia will soon follow.
